The Edinburgh Walking Tour Company
The Golden Age of Edinburgh
This is a tour of the late 18th and early 19th centuries parts of Old Town Edinburgh, exploring how the 'Scottish Enlightenment ' and 'Age of Reason' came to be during the Golden Age of Edinburgh.
We walk under the magnificent shadow of Edinburgh Castle, high above us on the Royal Mile, showing the famous taverns where men and women of religion, science, medicine, philosophy and literature were all inspired to create a new modern philosophy of life and to break free from the shackles of medieval times, and were the inspiration for thousands of people in the years to come.
Adam Smith (father of economics), David Hume (philosopher), James Hutton (geologist) and many more are all discussed as we marvel at this great academic and intellectual revolution. We will see where these great people worked, lived and socialised and as well as the University of Edinburgh.
