The Edinburgh Walking Tour Company
Jekyll and Hyde (starring Burke & Hare)
Join two of our most experienced Blue Badge Scottish Tour Guides and with them visit some of the places and meet some of the characters who inspired Robert Louis Stevenson’s famous novel “The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde”. Richard & Jenny developed this walk in 2014 and have a great deal of knowledge to share, as well as being great storytellers. Hundreds of schoolchildren studying the book for GCSE have been inspired by the places we visit and the tales we tell.
Our walk starts at the site of the ancient hanging gallows and ends at one of the most haunted spots in medieval Edinburgh
Our Burke & Hare tour is part of our 'Jekyll and Hyde' tour, taking in these infamous 19th century murderers, who killed 16 innocent people in Edinburgh’s 'Old Town' for financial gain, selling their corpses to the medical school of the Edinburgh University.
We tell their story and other tales of the darker side of Old Edinburgh’s past, taking you deep into the narrow streets, closes and wynds. All this with the breath-taking views of Edinburgh Castle looming above us while we walk.
We venture onto the famous street the Royal Mile, passing St Giles Cathedral and telling you how Robert Louis Stevenson devloped his thinking and inspiration for his novel “Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde”. We show you where Stevenson socialised – down the side streets and closes of the Royal Mile and in the taverns where he encountered the darker side of humanity.
The tour ends on the Royal Mile, at the entrance to the famous Mary King's Close, renowned for its history of the dreaded medieval plague and the many spirits who are said to be trapped for eternity in this area directly below the streets we walk on.
